Over the past week, most of us have lived in a world dominated by a whirling wind and a bone-chilling cold.
“Where did this come from?”
It came from the top of the world, a place whose temperatures plunge as low as forty degrees below zero. An unseen and often misunderstood weather system will press these temps down the map as far as Florida, which is what we have experienced.
The Polar Vortex
I propose to you that when Jesus teaches us how to pray in Matthew chapter six, there is a request made that can affect our world with an atmosphere from another place.
“Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”
There is a domain, not of this world, where God’s will is done in perfection. Heaven. God rules and reigns in absolute authority with no rebellion, selfishness, or doubt.
When we pray, we are asking the Lord in general, to send God's liberty, power, and purpose into the domain in which we live. Implicitly, we are volunteering ourselves to be agents of heaven. I can’t control anyone else; however, I can volunteer myself to make space for His will to be done in my world as it is in His world.
Heavenly Father, let your kingdom come; your will be done in me as it is in heaven.
In earth as it is in heaven.
Jesus used a little earth with a measure of His spit and smeared it over the eyesockets of a blind man. The result was miraculous. A little earth was in His hand, willing to accept what he put inside of it, and placed in a mess, miracles happened.
I suggest miracles still happen to dirty mud when in the Hand of God, willing to be smeared and come in contact with the poor and blind where we live.
However, some of us are plagued with a natural resistance to yielding to His hand and being placed in direct contact with people with great need. We are more comfortable dwelling in the low-level spots of observation rather than being lifted up by God and put directly in the middle of a mess.
What would happen if we recognized that prayer is as much a call for the movement of heaven as it is a compliant prayer of surrender to be involved in the miracle? Like a sail gives an invitation to the wind, our prayer is inviting God to move, direct, lead, and use us in His Kingdom and Will.
This is about you and Jesus. However, what happens when we can find a partner in prayer?
When we individually can find other individuals to pray with us this invitation, the environment of the Kingdom of God grows exponentially.
Scripture says, “Two or three gathered in His name.”
As the circle grows, the possibilities multiply.
I suggest that it is possible for your world to be affected more by the Spirit of God than even our world was affected by the polar vortex.
The Heavenly Vortex.
What is possible?
“And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts 2:1-4
Today, join me in a chorus of praying this model prayer. Let us pray it as intended. It is an invitation for the Holy Wind of God and let him fill hearts, minds, and bodies with His Kingdom and Will.
In Him, By Him, Through Him,
Scott A. Phillips
Matthew 6:9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.11 Give us this day our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
