“If ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.”
Jesus made many bold declarations that drove the religious leaders of His day mad. The quote above is an example.
Here are other bold declarations of Jesus.
I am the bread of life;
I am the light of the world.
I am the door of the sheep
I am the good shepherd.
I am the resurrection and the life.
I am the way, and the truth, and the life.
I am the true vine,
I am from above
Before Abraham was, I am.
When Jesus said to them, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground."
I listened to a conversation recently where one of the men said, “Some believe Jesus is a good teacher who taught wonderful things that can cause you to live a good life.”
In response the person quoted C.S. Lewis.
“If Jesus were not Lord, he would be a liar or a lunatic.”
If one reads all of the things Jesus said of himself and what the Bible says about Jesus, you can’t walk away believing Jesus is just a good man, prophet, or simply a teacher.
Jesus questioned his disciples about His identity.
“ Jesus saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Matthew 16:15-19
You are the Christ! The Son of the Living God!
This emphatic declaration of Peter, Jesus recognized as a revelation given to Peter from God himself. Jesus was, in effect, saying, “Exactly!”
He further prophesied/declared the importance of this revelation and anchored the coming events upon Peter because of this Revelation.
It’s no accident that Peter preached the first Gospel message after the Resurrection of Jesus. Further, it was Peter who the Lord used to open the door to the Gentiles, even the rest of the world outside of the Jews. Peter had and gave the Keys in Acts 2 and we see these keys used in Acts 8, 10 & 19.
When we have a personal revelation of Jesus, it will open doors and give us bold authority to be instrumental in helping others come to a knowledge of the Kingdom of God and its King.
Jesus declared, ““If ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.” John 8:24
I Believe Jesus is the I AM !
Jesus is all I need!
In Him, By Him, Through Him,
Scott A. Phillips
In the Old Testament, God reveals His name to Moses as "I AM WHO I AM" (Exodus 3:14), which in Hebrew is "YHWH" (often rendered as Yahweh or Jehovah). Jesus using "I am" connects His identity directly to the God of Israel, declaring divinity and eternal existence. This usage is rightly interpreted as Jesus claiming to share in the very nature of God.
"I am" implies self-existence or aseity, meaning that Jesus exists by His own nature, not derived from anything else. This underscores His eternal nature, which is a characteristic of divinity. It signifies that He is not just a historical figure but an eternal being, existing before all creation.
Jesus' use of "I am" can be seen as fulfilling Old Testament messianic prophecies implicitly or explicitly. For instance, the "I am he" of Isaiah 43:10-13, where God declares there is no savior besides Him, finds its echo in Jesus' self-identification, suggesting that He is the promised and ultimate savior.
In summary, Jesus' use of "I am" in the New Testament, especially in John, is pivotal for understanding Christian theology regarding the divinity of Jesus, His role in salvation, His eternal nature, and His intimate relationship with humanity. These statements are foundational to Christian doctrines about Christology and the nature of God.
