25 times in the book of John, Jesus begins a proclamation and conclusion with these words.
In Summary, Verily, Verily is a way that Jesus starts with two exclamation marks. What I am about to say is vital for your understanding, obedience, and observance.
The linguistic origin of the Greek word used is the Hebrew word translated Amen, usually used at the end of a saying.
Verily, Truly, or Surely.
The doubling of this word intensifies the importance of what is being communicated.
Verily, this is true, and you need to receive it.
Verily, Verily, this is vital, crucial, heavy, substantive and of the utmost importance.
The Bible is supernatural in inspiration, and its preservation speaks to the sovereign wisdom of God being available to us today.
Billions of Bibles have been printed since the first Bible was printed on the Gutenberg press.
Further, I believe the Bible is flawless and perfect in its original language. Of course, there are flaws and misinterpretations/misunderstandings in translations. We have access to sufficient translations for one to know and understand the truth. I reject the idea one must be able to speak and read Greek to have a legitimate grasp of truth.
I believe the Bible is true. Every Jot and Tittle.
However, Jesus places heavy emphasis on certain things he said. All scripture is true. Some truth must be an anchoring point. Beware of those who seek to minimize any of the New Testament verses. Double Beware those that would minimize the words of Jesus. Full stop.
Verily, Verily,
Jesus used the double emphasis. We need to pay even closer attention.
Verily Verily
These two words intensify the affirmation, emphasizing the truth or certainty of what will be said.
The Gospel of John was written about four decades after the first Gospel. John is believed to be in his eighties when he began writing. I think there is a significant reason why God inspired him to write.
I suggest the reason is simply this. Without the writings of John, Christianity and its core truths would be significantly different. The Gospel of John is a Verily Verily. And underlining and emphasis, building upon the truth found in the previous three gospels.
The first three gospels repeat many of the same themes. However, it would seem John, through the inspiration and wisdom of God, some vital truths needed to be recorded and preserved for the future believers had a firm conviction on some things.
To add to this need to understand, John records the Verily, Verilys’ of Jesus.
In John 10, it begins with this emphatic introduction.
John 10:1 - Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.
A few verses later, Jesus underlines this truth again.
John 10:7 - Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.
May I suggest to you, that in John, God has UNDERLINED this truth in Doubling Down.
Jesus is the only singular, exclusive, and narrow way to be saved.
Jesus gives us these wise words to discern so many platitudes that you might hear today as stark deception.
Jesus is not just a way, Jesus is the Only Way.
Jesus is not just a name, but THE Name, Verily, Verily the Only Name Under Heaven whereby we must be saved.
When we express faith and commitment to Jesus, it’s powerful.
When we are baptized into This Holy, Matchless, righteous Name, this is the New Testament equivalent of what Circumcision was to the Old Testament believers.
